PHIL MOELLER: Original Medicare includes Part A, which covers inpatient and hospital care, and Part B which covers doctor visits and other outpatient services. Many people with Original Medicare also buy a Part D prescription drug plan, from a private insurer.

There are many MA zero-dollar premium plans that charge no additional monthly premium beyond the Part B premium. Original Medicare pays eighty percent of covered outpatient costs. Many people buy private Medicare supplement plans, also known as Medigap for added protection.
