Finding mental health support through Calm Health

As more people search for solutions to help manage their mental health, the interest and usage of smartphone apps and digital tools continues to grow.1

But when it comes to starting a journey with a digital health app, it may be overwhelming when there are many to choose from. That’s why UnitedHealthcare is bringing Calm Health to more than 13 million commercial members as part of its offerings. Calm Health is more than a wellness app — it’s an evidence-based mental health app, designed to help people easily navigate to personalized mental health support.

“Helping our members access emotional wellbeing and mental health support resources is core to our mission at UnitedHealthcare,” said Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer at UnitedHealthcare, Employer & Individual. “We are providing our members with additional ways to help improve their mental well-being and also support for how to help manage their emotional and behavioral health.”

With millions of Americans familiar with Calm, Calm Health offers an entry point for UnitedHealthcare members to connect with personalized resources to help support their mental health in-the-moment or as a supplement to engagement with a licensed professional. This includes:

  • Mental health screenings: Calm Health leverages industry-standard screenings of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Based on screening results, people can receive personalized mental health education and resources that may help with their specific needs.
  • Coaching and therapy referrals: Calm Health is integrated with a person’s specific health plan benefits, helping connect them to additional behavioral health resources and services included in their plan. This may include referrals to virtual behavioral coaching or licensed mental health therapists outside of Calm Health.
  • Personalized programs and daily self-care content: Individuals have access to Calm Health’s full library of mental health resources including programs created by psychologists for common mental health challenges, physical conditions or life experiences. In addition to these programs, members can explore daily tools to help with mindfulness, anxiety support, stress management, better sleep and more.
“While mental health challenges are becoming less stigmatized, access to care still lags behind,” said David Ko, Calm CEO. “UnitedHealthcare’s adoption of Calm Health marks a pivotal step in helping make mental health care and resources as accessible and essential as physical health care. By combining Calm's digital expertise with UnitedHealthcare's network for those that may need mental health therapy, our goal is to engage millions, including those in underserved communities, to help empower them to proactively manage their mental health and ultimately help drive behavior change.”
