Encouraging employee well-being with the Calm Health app

Accessing mental health support should be as easy as getting physical health care, and digital tools like Calm Health are making this a reality for employees.

More than 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness,1 which fall along a spectrum of low- to high-severity issues. But no matter the severity, these mental illnesses may have ripple effects on a person’s physical health, as well as their work and personal lives. It’s no wonder that interest in and usage of smartphone apps and digital tools continues to grow as more people search for convenient solutions to help manage their lower severity mental health concerns.2

But with an abundance of options in the market, it can be overwhelming to choose a digital health app and get started using it. That’s why UnitedHealthcare added Calm Health to certain health plans. More than 13M of its commercial members will have access to the app. And Calm Health is more than a wellness app — it’s an evidence-based mental health app, designed to help people easily navigate to personalized mental health support.

Well-being leads the way

Through Calm Health, eligible employees with UnitedHealthcare benefits have access to:

  1. On-demand mental health screenings
  2. Guidance to the right level of support based on results
  3. Personalized programs written by psychologists for chronic conditions
  4. Support for mental health challenges or life experiences
  5. Referrals to other mental health solutions chosen by their employer, such as virtual behavioral health coaching and higher levels of care as well when available

Calm Health also provides a library of self-care content for members looking to manage stress and anxiety, find better sleep and build life-changing habits.

“Helping our members access emotional well-being and mental health support resources is core to our mission at UnitedHealthcare,” says Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer for UnitedHealthcare Employer & Individual. “We are providing our members with additional ways to help improve their mental well-being and also support for how to help manage their emotional and behavioral health.”

Calm Health offers a secure and convenient entry point for UnitedHealthcare members to connect with personalized resources to support their mental health needs in-the-moment or as a supplement to engagement with a licensed professional, which includes:

Mental health screenings: Calm Health’s industry-standard screenings leverage the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Based on screening results, employees can receive personalized mental health education and resources that may help with their specific needs.

Coaching, counseling and therapy referrals: Calm Health is integrated with an employee’s specific health plan benefits, helping connect them to additional behavioral health resources and services included in their plan, based on their screening results. This can include referrals to virtual behavioral coaching or licensed mental health therapists outside of Calm Health.

Personalized programs and daily self-care content: Employees also have access to Calm Health’s full library of mental health resources including programs written by psychologists for common mental health challenges, physical conditions or life experiences. In addition to these programs, members can explore daily tools to help with mindfulness, anxiety support, stress management, better sleep and more.

Calm Health is part of a continuum of solutions

Calm Health is part of an entire ecosystem of mental and behavioral health solutions at UnitedHealthcare, including coaching, in-person or virtual visits, “in the moment” support programs, family support programs and more.
